Environmental Sustainability & Global Partnership

Global Partnership:
Stats:

  • As of 2010 there have been 277001.6196 internet users in Benin.
  • As of 2007 60,000 people in Benin have personal computers.
  • In 2007 there were 459469 telephone lines and cellular subscribers.

Environmental Sustainability:

PROBLEM:

Water Supply & Sanitation (Rural areas)

Water sanitation has been negleted much more than water supply. There have been many outside sources who have donated time and money to help start programs for adequate water supply.
"In order to reach the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) concerning water and sanitation, the Ministry of Economic and Financial Development estimates that US$80 million and US$22 million, respectively are needed per year from 2006 to 2015.For the sake of comparison, less than US$ 10 million per year have been invested in water supply and sanitation in rural areas where 55% of the population of Benin lives."

CAUSES:
Programs are more focused on ensuring that urban areas have sanitized water, the focus gets lost when it comes to rural areas.

Waste water treatment in Benin is very rare. In a village of about 1,000 houses only 2 homes know how to properly dispose of their waste water.

Stats:
  • Benin Falls below 20% of improvement in sanitation facilities.
  • In 2008 Benin saw a 75% improvement in their population drinking water source.
  • 11% of the population improved sanitation in 2008%
PROPOSITION:
I believe the first thing that needs to happen is families need to be taught how to properly dispose of waste water. By doing this, they will not only reduce pollution but sanitation in their living conditions will improve, the risk of malaria and other deathly diseases will decrease.

Secondly the government needs to start building new water wells or other forms of access to water that will be helpful for each village. Studies have shown that there is plenty of water in Benin for the demand.
